Higham Cricket Club Announces Major Developments and Strategic Vision for 2026

Higham Cricket Club has unveiled an ambitious programme of developments for 2026 following its annual meeting, where committee members, players, and supporters gathered to review recent achievements and outline priorities for the year ahead.

Club Chair Dan Bamforth opened the meeting with a warm welcome to all attendees, with special recognition given to newly appointed committee members who were encouraged to consider areas in which they may wish to contribute as the club continues to grow.

Reflecting on a Successful 2025, the club celebrated a productive season, highlighted by the successful completion of major refurbishment works to the bar area prior to the start of play. This improvement was acknowledged as a key milestone in enhancing the matchday experience for members and visitors.

Five Strategic Priorities for 2026
Higham Cricket Club has identified five core areas of focus for the coming year, each aimed at strengthening the club’s infrastructure, community presence, and long‑term sustainability;

1. Facilities Expansion and Investment
A central priority for 2026 is further development of the club’s facilities. If plans are successfully progressed, the expansion will potentially support a series of major upgrades, including:

  • A larger kitchen and food preparation area
  • A dedicated conference/games room
  • Improvements to the side garden area

These enhancements aim to increase capacity, improve visitor experience, and support the club’s growing membership.

2. Strengthened Partnership with Thurgoland Cricket Club
The club announced the introduction of a new 3rd XI team based at Thurgoland Cricket Club, marking an exciting expansion of playing opportunities. While Thurgoland’s facilities are currently modest, recent renovation work has already begun to elevate the site.

Higham will hold monthly meetings with Thurgoland CC and periodic discussions with Thurgoland Parish Council to support further improvements and share expertise.

3. Growth of Women and Girls’ Cricket
A major milestone for the club is the establishment of its first 11‑a‑side hardball women’s team. This development reflects Higham’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women and girls in cricket and strengthening pathways for female players.

Special thanks were extended to Helen Panton, whose leadership and determination were instrumental in launching the team despite challenges faced last year. The club emphasised the importance of providing a clear progression route for girls, which will help attract players from other clubs that lack similar opportunities.

4. Renewed Focus on Sponsorship and Financial Sustainability
While sponsorship has remained strong in recent years, income has levelled off. With the club continuing to expand, committee members highlighted the need to reinvigorate sponsorship efforts.

The club notes that:

  • The bar operates on slim margins and is heavily weather‑dependent.
  • Sponsorship offers significantly higher returns.

Committee members have been encouraged to volunteer their support in exploring new sponsorship opportunities to ensure the club’s financial resilience.

5. Deepening Community Engagement
Higham Cricket Club reaffirmed its commitment to serving the local community, building on its involvement in initiatives such as the Christmas Lights project, the Warm Spaces scheme, and the BMBC‑funded Breakfast Initiative. The club also continues to develop its community garden, which has become a valued space for local residents.

Looking ahead, the club reiterates its pride in its continued growth and its positive impact on the village and wider community and so aims to host more events throughout the year for Higham villagers and will explore new ways to reach residents who may be unaware of the club’s activities or services.

To conclude with a message of optimism: while the club may not reach the summit of its ambitions within the year, each season presents new opportunities to improve, innovate, and build on the strong foundations already in place at HCC.
